Environment Victoria

Environment Victoria is an independent charity, funded by donations. Together we’re campaigning to solve the climate crisis and build a thriving, sustainable society that protects and values nature.

Over 50 years, Environment Victoria had some big successes. Developing world-leading water conservation laws in the 1970s. Winning campaigns to create Gariwerd (Grampians National Park) and the Alpine National Park in the 80s. Improving public transport in the 90s, and bringing sustainability to multicultural communities in the 2000s. Together we've saved forests, stopped dams, restored wetlands and replaced the world's dirtiest power station with clean energy. In the 2000s we pioneered sustainability programs for multicultural communities, and we worked with Traditional Owners and community groups to secure more water for the Murray River.

Since 2006, we’ve been campaigning to replace Victoria’s dirty coal-burning power stations like with clean energy from the sun and wind. One of the biggest campaigns that raises a lot of donation for Environment Victoria is the Murray River Project. On the world’s driest inhabited continent, water is life. But Australia’s largest and most important river system – the Murray-Darling – is on the brink of collapse, and we need your help to restore it to health. n the world’s driest inhabited continent, water is life. But Australia’s largest and most important river system – the Murray-Darling – is on the brink of collapse, and we need your help to restore it to health.  People depend on the health of the river system too. More than two million people live in the Basin, including 40 different First Nations, and they rely on this river water for drinking, farming, fishing and swimming. The river system is complex, but the core problem is simple – people have been taking too much water from the river, which doesn’t leave enough to sustain the wildlife and wetlands that also need a decent drink.
